The service includes three benchmark assessments that predict proficiency on state high-stakes tests. Discovery Education’s protocol for screening involves the first two tests administered 7 months and 4 months prior to the state-mandated end-of-year tests.

The program allows educators to both screen for students at risk and focus instruction on state standards for all students.

Each test uses state-standards and a growth scale, based on Rasch statistics to predict state proficiency levels, identifying students who are at-risk for non-proficiency.

The first test is administered as early as possible in the school year to identify those skills that have not been retained between the end of prior school year and the beginning of the current grade level.

The test administered near the end of the first semester (and at least 3 to 4 months prior to the state-mandated tests) is not paced but rather relies on the state standards and performance expectations for the students’ current grade level.

All tests are multiple-choice items, typically between 30 and 40 items per test.

Two composite scores: number of items and Rasch scale score.  

Scoring is based on right/wrong with the number of items correct determining the proficiency and growth scale.
