NEWS FROM THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

Billions Available to Retain Teachers; Assist Students

The U.S. Department of Education plans to make $44 billion in stimulus funds available to states in the next 30 to 45 days to help avert hundreds of thousands of estimated teacher layoffs, while driving crucial education improvements and results for students. Additional funding will be available within the next 6 months.

Missouri State Map

Missouri has established a strong level of cooperation across special and general education as a priority for their RTI efforts. The state has asked the National Center on Response to Intervention (NCRTI) for direct support in the following:

  • building awareness of effective instruction across RTI tiers
  • linking RTI implementation across the four state initiatives (Literacy, PBIS, High Schools that Work and Professional Learning Communities) through the Missouri Integrated Model
  • initial implementation of RTI in selected school districts.

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Division of Special Education has worked with several districts to provide funds to support the implementation of RTI academic practices:

  • North Kansas City – 1 year grant (2005-2006)
  • St. Louis Area Consortium including Kirkwood, Mehlville, Webster Groves, in conjunction with Special School District – 3 year grant (2005-2008)
  • Carthage – 2 year grant (2006-2008)
  • Excelsior Springs – School Improvement Grants
  • Reed Springs – School Improvement Grant

What Works Clearinghouse Guide: RTI Can Assist Students Who Struggle with Reading

What Works Clearinghouse logo This new guide by the What Works Clearinghouse offers five specific recommendations to help educators identify struggling readers and implement evidence-based strategies to promote their reading achievement. Teachers and reading specialists can use these strategies to implement RTI and multi-tier intervention methods and frameworks at the classroom or school level. Recommendations address how to screen students for reading problems, design a multi-tier intervention program, adjust instruction to help struggling readers, and monitor student progress. Roadmap to Pre-K RTI: Applying Response to Intervention in Preschool Settings
