Archived NCRTI Webinar: Planning and First Steps for RTI
On September 29th, the National Center on Response to Intervention hosted a webinar entitled "Planning and First Steps for RTI." Led by Dr. Alexandra Hilt-Panahon and Deborah Gould Stover, this webinar provided examples of what planning is required before implementing RTI, as well as the initial steps to take when implementing RTI within schools. The webinar also included examples of how schools are using RTI to address the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Ideas on how schools have resolved challenges such as who provides interventions and how schedules may be revised were shared as well. To access an archive of this webinar, visit the Center’s website.

New York State RTI Technical Assistance Center
The New York State Response to Intervention Technical Assistance Center (NYS RtI-TAC) supports capacity-building efforts of NYS schools to implement proven and promising practices within a Response to Intervention model. The NYS RtI-TAC’s website offers an array of RtI resources and tools for educators and families. The NYS RtI-TAC is also collaborating with Erie I BOCES and the National Center on Response to Intervention to provide regional training sessions for educators and other stakeholders within the state. The first training session, to be held on October 14th, is entitled "Jumpstarting the RtI Process in Your School," and will be led by Dr. Daryl Mellard. This day-long, free of charge workshop is being held in the Western (Buffalo/Rochester) Region and will provide an overview of the critical features and concepts of RtI as well as a set of tools that school-based RtI teams can use to begin designing an RtI process. The workshop will also focus on how to establish building-level adoption or consensus for RtI. Other regional training sessions that will be held throughout the year include " RtI and ELLs: Instructional and Assessment Considerations," and "Data Based Decision Making within the RtI Process."

NCEE Releases a REL Report on Models of Response to Intervention in the Northwest Region States
The National Center for Education Evaluation and Regional Assistance (NCEE) within the Institute of Education Sciences has released a report from REL Northwest entitled "Models of Response to Intervention in the Northwest Region States." This report provides information on the response to intervention (RTI) models supported by state education agencies in the Northwest Region and identifies states' RTI-related resources, policies, and activities. The information will help the Northwest Regional Comprehensive Center focus its technical assistance for RTI and identify areas for cross-state collaboration, while enabling states to learn from each other's experience. Click here to view, download and print the report as a PDF file.
The RTI Action Network’s Voices from the Field
In the RTI Action Network's Voices from the Field, educators and families discuss their experiences with RTI—what they did, the challenges they faced, the outcomes of their efforts, and advice they would give others. In the latest Voices from the Field story, Dr. Aaron Deris, intervention specialist for ISD 27 in Bloomington, Minnesota, describes how his RTI Team initially piloted the RTI framework in two of their elementary schools and how they are now looking to expand it into all other district schools. He also discusses some challenges that occurred during implementation, such as finding a common screening tool, having enough staff to conduct the interventions, and scheduling.

Implementing RTI Using Title I, Title III, and CEIS Funds: Key Issues for Decision-makers
This presentation, created by the U.S. Department of Education, answers questions about funds provided under three Federal programs: Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; and funds for Coordinated Early Intervening Services, available under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Specifically, the presentation:
- Provides general background information about each of these three Federal programs;
- Defines what the U.S. Department of Education means by RTI, recognizing that there are multiple RTI frameworks and varying terminology; and
- Provides specific examples of how Title I, Title III, and CEIS funds may be used to support RTI.
American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: Using ARRA Funds Provided Through Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to Drive School Reform and Improvement
Also developed by the U.S. Department of Education, this document provides suggestions as to how ARRA funds may be used to support IDEA Part B, including a Response to Intervention framework, specifically:
- Supporting students who are currently not receiving special education and related services and who need additional academic or behavioral support to succeed in the regular education environment;
- Purchasing curriculum-based screening and progress monitoring and formative assessment measurement instruments, and curriculum materials for intensive instruction; and
- Providing professional development for school or LEA staff to appropriately and effectively implement evidence-based instructional and positive behavior practices.
In addition to Response to Intervention (pp. 20-21), this document discusses several other areas where IDEA Part B and ARRA funds can be used.
