On February 9th at 2:00 pm EST, the National Center on Response to Intervention (NCRTI) is hosting a free webinar entitled "RTI in Middle Schools." This webinar will provide an overview of a nationwide study of middle schools that exhibit exemplary RTI practices. Information will be shared about scheduling, generating staff buy-in, planning and training for RTI, and the benefits to students and staff. Challenges, next steps, and advice from several middle schools will also be shared. Our special guest presenters for this webinar will be Dr. Daryl Mellard and Sarah Prewett.

This webinar is presented in collaboration with the RTI Action Network. On February 18th, at 3:00 pm EST, the RTI Action Network will present an RTI Talk on "Implementing RTI in Middle Schools." This companion to the February 9th webinar, "RTI in Middle Schools," will provide an opportunity for you to submit questions directly to experienced implementers regarding how RTI works in middle schools. Learn more about the RTI Talk.
Join Jeanice Kerr Swift and Lori Smith as they answer your questions about key issues related to RTI including scheduling; staff buy-in; preparation, planning and training for RTI; benefits to students and staff; challenges, and next steps. Ms. Swift and Dr. Smith will offer specific tips for how school teams can work together to introduce and sustain RTI at the middle school level.
Upcoming Webinar: The Implementation of Tiered Interventions and RTI in High Schools
The High School Tiered Interventions Initiative (HSTII) is hosting a free webinar on February 11th from 3:00pm-4:30pm EST. The webinar, entitled "The Implementation of Tiered Interventions and RTI in High Schools: A Summary of Findings from the HSTII," will provide an overview of the information gathered from numerous interviews and eight high school site visits conducted by HSTII staff. Specifically, Dr. Lou Danielson and HSTII staff representatives from three centers will share information on how RTI essential elements can be implemented in high schools. In addition, they will discuss some of the issues and considerations commonly associated with RTI implementation in high schools, and how contextual factors specific to high school settings make RTI implementation increasingly complex and challenging. The presentation, suitable for anyone interested in RTI and tiered interventions at the high school level, will be followed by a question and answer session. HSTII, a collaboration among the National Center on Response to Intervention, the National High School Center, and the Center on Instruction, explores how RTI and tiered interventions are being implemented at the high school level.

EdWeek Article: RTI Said to Pay Off in Gains for English-Learners
This recent EdWeek article describes how the use of response to intervention with English language learners (ELLs) in California’s Chula Vista Elementary School District has led to a significant increase in the students’ reading and math test scores. Using RtI with ELL students in Chula Vista has improved the quality of core instruction, or Tier 1 instruction, to meet the needs of ELLs. Also, third-tier instruction is aimed at ensuring a language barrier is not being mistaken for a learning disability, which would result in a student being placed in special education. To read this article and learn more about Chula Vista’s implementation of RtI with ELLs, visit EdWeek's website.
ASU’s Equity Alliance: 2010 Leadership for Equity and Excellence Forum
