Webinar Series:  RTI and Learning Disability (LD) Identification

The NCRTI is pleased to announce a new series of webinars that address how RTI relates to comprehensive evaluations and the identification of specific learning disabilities (SLD). Dr. Lou Danielson, senior advisor to the NCRTI, opens the series in part one by discussing the federal regulations relevant to RTI and SLD determination, and part two addresses policy letters written by the Department of Education on the topics.  Keep an eye out for future webinars, which will cover determining students’ responsiveness to interventions and state and local perspectives on comprehensive evaluations and the identification of learning disabilities

Maine Holds RTI Summer Academy: Enhancing Academics and Behavior for All

From June 27-July 1, 2011, Maine held the 2011 Maine RTI Academy in Portland and Presque Isle, ME. Each site provided district teams with the opportunity to further their understanding of implementing RTI for both academics and behavior. The opening keynote, given by Dr. Steve Goodman, Co-Director for Michigan's Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative (MiBLSi), focused on how RTI provides a multi-tier system for supporting all students in both academics and behavior. The following days provided opportunities for district teams to learn from national, regional, and state-level experts on a range of topics related to implementing RTI.  Kate Semeniak, a Technical Assistance Support Specialist for the NCRTI, gave a presentation titled RTI and Systems Change focused on implementing RTI. IRIS Center Releases New Module focused on RTI and Mathematics

The RTI: Mathematics Module, recently released by the IRIS Center, describes the RTI framework as applied to mathematics. It includes discussions of instruction, assessment, and data-based decision making at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. National Center for Learning Disabilities Releases Issue Brief

The National Center for Learning Disabilities recently released an issue brief titled “Multi-Tier System of Supports aka Response to Intervention (RTI).” The brief provides recommendations for how Multi-tier Systems of Support or RTI could be incorporated within the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) to better align federal education law across general and special education.


U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

IES Releases Review of RTI Policies and Practices in Six Midwest States

The Institute of Education Sciences’s (IES) Midwest Regional Education Lab released a report focused on state policies and procedures for RTI in the Midwest region. The qualitative study is based on the review of state documents and interviews with state and local officials in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio. The report focuses on state education agency policy development and planning for RTI implementation and looks at the support provided to districts and schools implementing response to intervention. Read this report and similar reports from the southeast region, northeast and island region states, northwest region, and west region.
